Built-Up Stress: Working Out as a Release

Tori (Daughter)

Sometimes my stress level builds up so much that it feels like there is nowhere for it to go.

Between responsibilities, emotions, overthinking, and everyday problems, it can become exhausting carrying everything around mentally. Working out has literally become one of the best ways for me to release that built-up stress because it gives me a healthy place to put it all, especially all of the emotions I may not know how to express.

When I exercise, my attention shifts away from everything that has been weighing on my mind.

Instead of thinking about what went wrong, what might happen, or things I can’t control, I can focus on the movement in front of me. Whether I am lifting weights, running, walking, or doing something challenging. Every repetition feels like I am letting go of a little bit of the tension I have been holding inside. Exercise gives my mind a temporary break while allowing my body to release some of that built-up energy.

Working out, is also just a great reminder that I am stronger than the stress I am experiencing.

There is something rewarding about walking into a workout feeling overwhelmed and then later walking out feeling lighter, calmer, and more accomplished. My problems may still be waiting for me afterward, but my mindset feels different. I feel more capable of handling them instead of allowing them to consume me.

For me, working out is more than something I do for my physical appearance.

It is an emotional release and a form of self-care. On the days when my thoughts feel heavy or life becomes overwhelming, moving my body gives me an opportunity to clear my head, reconnect with myself, and turn stress into something productive. Sometimes the best therapy for a stressful day is simply putting on my headphones, starting my workout, and allowing myself to release everything I have been carrying.
